Description of evidence and how it demonstrates the standard(s):

One of the main projects for my Content Area Reading class was an annotated bibliography for a themed text set that was made up of ten books with at least seven of them being different genres.  I aligned this assignment, including all of the chosen books, with sixth grade Common Core.

Implication for Future Teaching:

The theme I chose for this text set unit is the Holocaust, which could be tied in with the students’ Social Studies if and when they do a unit on the Holocaust.  There is a wide varieties of genres written on the Holocaust, which allows the students to learn more about this time in history as well as understand that one topic can be written in many forms of text.  By this point in their education, the students should have some background knowledge of the different types of text genres.

My purpose for this project is to compare and contrast various text genres to deepen the students’ understanding of them, while focusing on a unified theme.  I included a follow-up activity for each text.  The activities vary with each text and are meant to make the texts more meaningful.  In doing this project, I learned that teachers must know the content they teach and use meaningful experiences to teach it.  For example, I had background knowledge of the Holocaust from my own grade school experience and had read several of the texts I selected for this project.  In my search for texts, however, I learned more about the Holocaust myself as well as renewed my knowledge of text genres.  Lastly, I learned that it is crucial to select corresponding activities and tools of instruction to help enrich the learning experience and make it meaningful.
