Description of evidence and how it demonstrates the standard(s):

During my semester abroad in Gaming, Austria, I had the opportunity to tutor a couple of English-Learning European students and work with them to develop their learning of English.  I used a provided template to record what we worked on in each lesson as well as the progress they made.

Implication for Future Teaching:

My study abroad program allowed multiple European students take part in a program called the Language and Catechetical Institute in order to learn better English.  Many education majors, including myself, had the opportunity to tutor a couple of them on a one-on-one basis.  The first student I tutored was from Ukraine and hardly knew any English.  It was difficult to communicate with him, but I was impressed with the various ways he used to communicate and ask questions, such as drawing pictures.  My second tutee was from Belarus and was very learned and fluent in English.  She did not need much help learning the language, but merely needed grammatical corrections in her writings as well as some help in learning how to write good sentences.

Since each student came from differing learning levels, I worked with them according to their knowledge and ability.  Both of them progressed with each tutoring session.  Working with English Learning students from different countries and learning levels has allowed me to better understand the individual differences, diverse cultures and communities between students.  While these students were not at the middle school level, I will certainly apply what I learned about student learning differences in my future classroom so as to meet the needs of each learner in an inclusive environment.
