Description of evidence and how it demonstrates the standard(s):
This is a lesson plan written for a math lesson using a big book I created. The book is a picture story involving fraction problems and is geared towards fourth grade.
Implication for Future Teaching:
Creating a big book was something I had never done before, but very much enjoyed. The story is about a journey that involves a series of fraction problems that the students will solve as it is being read. The problems increase in difficulty with each one and they are arranged so that the answers are not given away before the students could solve them. Since the journey of the story ends at a “Crazy Candy Castle,” I will motivate the students by telling them that we will learn about fractions with candy after reading the book.
The students should have a very basic understanding of fractions prior to the lesson. The purpose of the book is to expose the students to a variety of fraction problems as well as introduce new vocabulary words prior to learning many of them in depth. My goal was to make fractional concepts take meaning by introducing them with methods that are fun and engaging. The fraction problems and vocabulary words are colorful-coded for the English Learners and some of the problems are hands-on and tactile. Creating a math lesson using a big book was a new experience for me and I hope to use it in my future classroom. This project lesson has taught me to plan for instruction that draws upon knowledge of content, pedagogy, knowledge of the learners, and that meets the needs of every learner.
