Description of evidence and how it demonstrates the standard(s):
In my AYA Math class, I learned how to use the computer program, Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP), as a tool to teach math. I wrote a lesson plan for a sixth grade math lesson I created using GSP as a practice activity for plotting ordered pairs on a graph.
Implication for Future Teaching:
This class was the first time I learned about GSP and I have found it to be an effective instructional strategy. It is helpful for diverse learners since it is both visual and kinesthetic, because it involves a computer. After learning all the tools to navigate it and having practiced making neat creations, my peers and I were asked to create a podcast math lesson using GSP and show it in class. My lesson was an activity for sixth grade to mainly practice plotting ordered pairs on a graph, but also to learn a new trick on GSP.
I have found GSP to be quite an amazing teaching tool for math. I witnessed many more methods in which my peers have used it to teach their content. Math is brought to life and it is easy to grasp the concept at hand. Additionally, I had the opportunity to use this lesson in a sixth grade math class without using GSP or a computer. I used it simply as a fun activity to practice plotting ordered pairs. The students enjoyed discovering the surprise picture results when they connected the points. In doing this project, I learned that using a variety of instructional strategies is essential to effectively teach content areas, to make meaning of the content, and to teach all learners. As a future teacher, I will include a variety of strategy tools, such as GSP, podcasts, and engaging activities, to support my instruction.
