Description of evidence and how it demonstrates the standard(s):
In my Teaching Language Arts class, a classmate and I had to co-teach a lesson to our peers as if they were our students. We wrote a detailed lesson plan that explains how we understood the development of individual students and met their needs.
Implication for Future Teaching:
My peer, or co-teacher, and I decided to teach a lesson for fifth grade on figurative language, focusing on similes and metaphors. Since my co-teacher is an intervention specialist, we chose several classmates to play the part of students with specific learning needs. We planned our lesson in such a way that we would meet the needs of these individuals, while managing the class as a whole. To do this, we made special adaptations to some of the activities according to the needs of these individuals.
Our lesson involved several interactive learning activities. It started with a brief Prezi to introduce the topic, which included a catchy song video to help the students learn the difference between similes and metaphors and to engage them right away. Using Kahoot, we created a game to test their knowledge in a way that was fun and risk-free. The other activities were collaborative, so the diverse learners were able to work with their peers. All the activities built off of each other and increased in difficulty. Planning and creating this lesson with my co-teacher allowed me to realize the importance of understanding how diverse learners grow and develop. Learning activities and experiences must be provided that are both appropriate and challenging for their development.
