Description of evidence and how it demonstrates the standard(s):
This is a final reflection paper about my semester tutoring a second grade student in reading and phonics. The school I tutored at uses the Success for All (SFA) program and this paper contains the final results of my tutee’s assessments.
Implication for Future Teaching:
I was assigned to an elementary school to tutor a second grade student twice a week using the SFA program. I had never used SFA prior to this, so I was unfamiliar with it at first. However, it was not hard to learn and use since it is a scripted program. On the first day, I used the SFA pre-assessment to see how much my tutee knew and understood Phonemic Awareness, Concepts of Print, and Letter Skills. My tutee was below grade level, and it definitely showed in the pre-assessment. I chose to use Tutoring Plan 1 with him, since he needed help grasping basic phonemic, letter, and word concepts. After five tutoring sessions, I re-assessed him. He improved since the pre-assessment and it was enough to move on to Tutoring Plan 2 for another five sessions. I enjoyed this tutoring experience in using and becoming familiar with the SFA program. It taught me a whole new method of effective assessment that allowed me to monitor student progress. Additionally, it helped my tutee and I make decisions for the next steps of his learning and growth. While this experience was at the elementary school level, what I learned about assessment certainly applies to the middle school level as well.
